Information about Treharris, UK
Treharris is a small town in the very south of the Welsh county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan in Wales, United Kingdom. It is located around 1 km west of Trelewis, from which it is separated by the Taff Bargoed river. It is widely regarded as the water leakage detection capital of Wales, as many employees of local water companies are sourced from the town.
Today Treharris has a population of 850-1000 (2001 Census).
The community was formed around Harris's Navigation Colliery, which begun coal mining excavations in 1878. The colliery and village were named after F. W. Harris and his Harris Navigation Steam Coal Company. Ownership transferred to the Ocean Coal Co. Ltd. in 1893 - so called because the pit supplied the coal for the transatlantic ocean liners, including the Cunard Line. The pit became known as Deep Navigation Colliery and remained in production until 1991. Treharris has the oldest Boys and Girls club in the whole of the United Kingdom.
Treharris Athletic is the local football (soccer) team, once winners of the Western League in 1910, who now ply their trade in the Welsh Football League.
During the early 21st century, like many ex-mining villages in the area, Treharris underwent significant regeneration to the town/village centre. Most, if not all of the land where Deep Navigation was situated has been landscaped and is now part of the new 'Millenium Park', where many of the local football and rugby teams play and train.
Treharris now has a one way system through the town centre (Fox Street).
Treharris once had a diverse range of shops located in the main town. Over the years, many of these shops have closed down, with many fast food shops replacing them.
