Mexican Dentistry
Dentists in Mexico can equal the best available across the world. The Asociación Dental Mexicana has over 50 years experience regulating its members and encourages continuing education and high ethical standards. Many Mexican dentists will also belong to the American Dental Association, benefiting from its training programs and keeping up to date with the latest in dental technologies.
Our three most popular dental clinics are:
Benefits of Travelling to Mexico
Perhaps the most obvious benefits of Mexico as a dental destination for Americans is its proximity and its low costs. A short car journey can put Califorians in the middle of one of the highest densities of dental clinics in the world.
Too much choice can be confusing, and with irregular federal oversight you need to know what to look for. Good dentists regularly attend courses to update their skills. Joining dental associations, whether Mexican or American is a good indication that a dentist is dedicated to their continuing professional development. Check the staff sections of clinics to see the academic work and practical training the dentists have completed.
Lower labour costs and cheaper office space allow Mexico's dentists to offer comparable treatments to their U.S neighbours at a very competitive cost. Our most popular destination in Mexico is currently Tijuana

Dentists in Mexico - Qualifications
Dental training and certification in Mexico is very similar to the United States. Study takes five years: four years of dental school followed by a one year internship and the passing of a professional exam.
Though there is no mandatory continuing education, many Mexican dentists avail of training courses run locally, in the U.S or Europe. There are 50 dental schools, regulated by the federal government.
There are 9 recognized dental specialties in Mexico including Endodontics, Periodontics and Orthodontics.
Dentists in Mexico - Additional Information
Organizations
All dentists must posses a certificate of graduation from a licenced educational institution. The title of dentist is confered at a federal level allowing free movement of dentists through the country.
The Asociación Dental Mexicana was established in 1942. The Consejo de Certificación de la Asociación Dental Mexicana registers Mexican dentists and the Asociación is more broadly responsible for the ethical and educational development of dentistry in Mexico. Certification with the ADM is not manditory.
Dental Ethics
Members of the ADM are bound by its code of ethics that stipulates the duties of dental surgeons. In common with the U.S and E.U these clarify the duty of a dentist to do no harm, look after the ongoing health of the patient, guard the confidentiality of client information and pass that information on to another dentist at the request of the patient.
Complaints
Ethical and procedural complaints can be passed to the ADM if the performing dentist is a member. Recourse through the courts is difficult and time consuming.
Continuing education
The ADM believes in the principle of continuous education for dentists. There is a process of recertification every 5 years which involves an examination of dental skills: all ADM members should have a copy of their certification valid for the current period.
Data Protection
There is data protection legislation in place in Mexico with specific categories for medical records. The ethical responsibilities of dental surgeons for the management of records include additional duties (see the dental ethics section above).

I was pleased with the treatment, also the clinic was top of the range, the only thing was the accommodation was a bit below par, this could be due to the renovations taking place but the location of the apartment was very good.

For dental implants to be successful, the jawbone must have enough bone to support them. You may not have enough bone because of tooth loss from periodontal (gum) disease, injury or trauma, or a developmental defect. If your jaw is too short (up and down), too narrow (side to side), or both, you will need a procedure to add bone to your jaw before implants can be placed.
Bone augmentation is a term that is used to describe a variety of procedures that are used to "build" bone so that dental implants can be placed. These procedures typically involve grafting (adding) bone or bonelike materials to the jaw, and waiting for the grafted material to fuse with the existing bone over several months.
The success rate for bone grafts in the jaws for the purpose of placing dental implants is very high. However, there is always a chance that the bone graft will fail, even if your own bone was used. Bone grafts are not rejected like organ transplants. When they fail, it is usually because of an infe

The most common way to replace missing teeth is to have a bridge placed. A false tooth is made
and attached to two porcelain crowns made for the natural teeth that are on either side of the
space where the tooth is missing. These crowns and the false tooth are one piece and are fixed
over the natural teeth ~ unlike a denture, bridges are not removable. A bridge will not only help
with appearance and function but can also allow other teeth to last longer by reducing the stress
put on them when a tooth or teeth are missing.
Bridges can be used to replace teeth that are missing from any place in your mouth as long as the
teeth that would be used to anchor the bridge are healthy and strong.
The position of the affected teeth has a bearing on the complexity of the procedure.

A crown (or cap) is a covering made to restore a tooth back to health & function. When teeth are
damaged from decay, weak from large old fillings, worn or broken down, crowns can be used to
give you back healthy functional teeth.
Crowns can be made out of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or full gold. An examination will
determine which option will be the best for you.

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement
teeth that are made to match your natural teeth. Success rates vary, depending on where in the jaw the implants are placed but, in general, dental implants have a success rate of up
to 97%. With proper care (see below), implants can last a lifetime.
In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for an implant
procedure. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral
hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders – such as diabetes or heart
disease – or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you are
considering implants, talk to your dentist to see if they are right for you.

More conservative than a crown, inlays and onlays are two methods of restoring normal tooth structure after decay or other damage. Inlays and onlays are known as indirect fillings because unlike a standard filling that is done in a dentist's office, both are made in a laboratory and cemented or bonded to the surface of the tooth during a second visit to the dentist. And unlike standard fillings, inlays and onlays do not weaken the tooth structure, but actually strengthens it. After the procedure the tooth can bear up to 50 - 75% more chewing force.
An inlay is done when the tooth structure replaced is within the cusp tips of the tooth. If the damage is more extensive and the new structure covers the entire chewing surface including one or more tooth cusps, the procedure is called an onlay.

A root canal (also called endodontic treatment) is the cleaning out
of the nerve of a tooth and replacing it with a material that seals
the inside of the root so infection cannot get back in .
Endodontic therapy may be necessary to save your natural tooth if
the pulp tissue is irreversibly damaged by bacteria associated
with decay, very deep fillings, tooth fracture or trauma, or
periodontal disease.
The position of the affected teeth, and conditions of surounding teeth has a bearing on the complexity of the procedure.

Were you pleased with the treatment?
I would highly recommend Dr. Shirley Baker for any dental work you need
to have done!
Dr. Baker saw me, this past July 2007. I had three teeth capped,
my teeth cleaned and whitened at her TJ office. She is fluent in
English, her office is a professional office with sterilized equipment,
it is modern, and her staff is all very helpful. Entering in to TJ is
safe as is exiting by foot. As you walk across the border, if you are
on foot, she will have a car waiting for you at the McDonalds which
takes you to her dental office. When your appointment is over, you are
returned to McDonalds to exit Mexico back into San Diego.
Her prices are exactly what she tells you each service will be, nothing
is hidden and sprung on you later. Dr. Baker is warm, gracious, and very
talented. She makes sure you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
What I loved the most was being able to watch movies while the work went
on. She has some sort of eyeglasses, which you are able to see what
looks like big, screen version of the movie. When I did a big belly
laugh, they stopped work until I had simmered down and opened my mouth
wide again.
Not only did I see Dr. Baker, but also so did my 85-year-old Mother. She
had 8 teeth pulled, her teeth cleaned and upper and lower partials made
by Dr. Baker which we were able to get while we were down there and not
month or so later like we have happen here at home. Just to have Moms
eight teeth pulled here was going to be $1200 and the upper and lower
partials would have been an additional 1,800. It was not nearly that
price, and she was kind and gentle with my Mom, gave her antibiotics and
painkillers for her extensive work, so she could be more comfortable.
Dr. Baker then called each day after the procedures.

Were you pleased with the treatment?
I am 64 - at least for the moment. I had a couple of root canals, posts and crowns done. I addition, I had implants. During the course of my treatment, I never had communication difficulties. Dr. Baker's English is great and so is the English of her staff. My procedures took the better part of five months. That's because it takes time for the implants to properly meld with the bone. I am very pleased with the work and service provided by Dr. Baker. I would not hesitate to go back to her again, although I currently don't require further work. I have no idea about your expectations and how particular you may or may not be. Mexico is a different environment from the desert. You'll probably see some equipment, like the lamp that they use to light up your mouth, with some flaking paint. However, everything I saw was properly sterilized and I felt very comfortable and not only do I have no complaints. I am pleased with the results and the service.

Were you pleased with the treatment?
I was pleased with quality of treatment! I would recomend it to family and friends. I would return if amount was guarenteed with no suprises!!! An average Root Canal in Mexico is $85.00 to $170.00 US I paid $300.00 US. An average Crown Is $95- $210 Us, I paid $300.00, then was hit with an Unexpected extra $200.00 for build up that was not initually discussed or agreed apon! costing me $800.00 US for a Root Canal and Porcilin Crown that should not have cost me more than $380.00 US together in Mexico!! that is $480.00 more than double the cost!!
I would return, IF it is agreed apon no more than $600.00 total including build up if needed.
