The Ministry of Health and Social Cohesion decides on overall health policy issues and on the national strategy for health.
The Greek (Pan-hellenic) Medical Association (PHMA) represents the professional interests of phyisicans with Greece. It is currently working to create an online register of qualified members. The PHMA is divided into regional chambers and a doctor must register with the local chamber in which they are to practice.
The Hellenic Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery is the main society for plastic surgeons in Greece and is directly affiliated with the European Society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
Education
The length of training including practical experience for a doctor in Greece is 6 years. The title awarded is Ptychion latrikis.
Plastic Surgery is a recognized specialty with a minimun of 6 years additional training as a registrar. This consists of 2 years of General Surgery, 3 years Plastic Surgery, and 2 single semester courses chosen from: Gynecology, Urology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Children Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. Speciailists are issued a "Titlos Iatrikis Eidikotitas" (certificate of medical specialisation) on compeletion of their period as a registrar.
Continuing education is promoted by Greece's hospitals and professional societies and is seen as an essential ethical responsibility.

Compliants against public institutions may be addressed to The Greek Ombudsman, an independant authority. Complaints may be addressed to the Greek Medical Association to be judged by its Ethical Committee.
A physician may also be judged by the ethical committee of any professional society to which they belong, though these will only have the power to censure or suspend membership within the scope of the society - not their activities in general practice.
Storage and Access to Medical Records
As a member of the Council of Europe, Greece is governed by the rules of that organization on the protection of personal data. Greece has its own independant Data Protection Authority. Access to data is also regulated by a number of laws, allowing individuals to access data held on them by public institutions.
Doctors have responsibilities to their patients beyond these regulations. They should co-operate with resonable requests for medical records as quickly as possible. There is a responsibility to store patients data safely and to store it for the period of time of its relevance.

Per tooth.A fixed bridge is a permanent replacement for missing teeth which can not be removed by the patient. Bridges are sometimes referred to as "crown and bridge" or a "fixed bridge". A bridge is constructed by preparing the teeth on both sides of a space so they can receive crowns. The teeth are reduced and shaped around the outside and across the top so a crown can fit tightly over them. Crowns are joined together to replace the missing teeth and cover the prepared teeth on each side providing support of the replacement. A bridge can be used only if there is enough strength to support the replacement teeth. This generally means there should be as many teeth providing support as there are being replaced. The type of replacement needed is also determined by careful evaluation of bone loss, size and shape of the root structure, the force which will be generated on the bridge and the strength of the remaining tooth structure.
The position of the affected teeth has a bearing on the complexity of the procedure.

A crown is a restoration that covers, or "caps," a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings won't solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked, a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage doesn't get worse. Crowns are also used to restore a tooth when there isn't enough of the tooth remaining to provide support for a large filling, attach a bridge, protect weak teeth from fracturing, restore fractured teeth or cover badly shaped or discolored teeth. To prepare the tooth for a crown, it is reduced so the crown can fit over it. Crowns require more tooth structure removal; hence they cover more of the tooth than veneers. Crowns are customarily indicated for teeth that have sustained significant loss of structure or to replace missing teeth. Crowns may be placed on natural teeth or dental implants.
Floss or interdental cleaners are important tools to remove plaque from the crown area where the gum meets the tooth.

A composite filling is the only type of dental filling that we use in our office. A composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore decayed teeth. Composites are also used for cosmetic improvements of the smile by changing the color of the teeth or reshaping disfigured teeth.Introduced in the 1960s, dental composites were confined to the front teeth because they were not strong enough to withstand the pressure and wear generated by the back teeth. Since then, composites have been significantly improved and can be successfully placed in the back teeth as well. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root (synthetic material) that is surgically anchored into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefit of using implants is that they don't rely on neighbouring teeth for support, they are permanent and stable. Implants are a good solution to tooth loss, because they look and feel like natural teeth. Implant material is made from different types of metallic and bone-like ceramic materials that are compatible with body tissue. There are placed directly into the jaw bone, like natural tooth roots. Strategically placed, implants can be used to support permanently cemented bridges, eliminating the need for a denture.
The process can take up to nine months to complete. Each patient heals differently, so times will vary. After the implants are placed surgically, the healing process can take up to six months and the fitting of replacement teeth no more than two months. Sometimes, if a patient has good bone quality, implants can be placed and replacement teeth fitted in one appointment.

Underneath your tooth’s outer enamel and within the dentin is an area of soft tissue called the pulp tissue. While a tooth’s pulp tissue does contain nerve fibers, it is also composed of arteries,veins, lymph vessels, and connective tissue. Each tooth’s nerve enters the tooth at the very tip of its roots. From there, the nerve runs through the center of the root in small “root canals,” whichjoin up with the tooth’s pulp chamber. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to a deep cavity or fracture, the blood supply to the tooth may be lost and the tooth pulp may die. Root canal therapy is a procedure that removes the damaged or dead pulp. The canal is reshaped and filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material, to prevent recontamination of the tooth. The tooth is then permanently sealed.
Following root-canal treatment there may be some inflammation around the gum tissues, which may cause discomfort for a few days. This canbe controlled by an over-the-counter pain reliever. From this point on, brush and floss regularly, avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth.

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic material, which are bonded to the front of your teeth to change the color or the shape of your teeth. This procedure requires little or no anaesthesia, and can be the ideal choice for improving the appearance of the front teeth. Porcelain veneers are placed to mask discolorations, to brighten teeth, and to improve a smile composed of teeth with uneven surfaces or are chipped, oddly shaped, unevenly spaced or crooked teeth. Porcelain veneers are an excellent alternative to crowns in many situations. They provide a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth's colour, size, or shape. Porcelain veneers can mask undesirable defects, such as teeth stained by tetracycline, by an injury, or as a result of a root-canal procedure, and are ideal for masking discoloured fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider porcelain veneers. Generally, veneers will last for many years, and the technique has shown remarkable longevity when properly performed.
Veneers are reasonable facsimiles of natural teeth, not perfect replacements. It's not uncommon to see slight variations in the color of veneers upon close inspection, as this occurs even in natural teeth. Nevertheless, this procedure can greatly enhance your smile and can heighten self-esteem.
