ExperimentAmerica’s National Museum of Dentistry does not sound like the kind place to enjoy yourself, but their kids’ section rocks. A lot of other sites have fun games but this one actually is fun!Particularly gross is an experiment that lets children see the effects of tobacco on our friendly set of teeth. Irish dental costs too high says Competition Authority

Posted by Tim, October 5, 2007 12:30 AM | permalink

“Consumers are paying too much for dental services”, says Bill Prasifka, Chairperson of the Competition Authority. The report highlights 26 areas which have a negative effect on consumer value. A core problem is the current set of rules governing dentists that prevent advertising of dental practices and their prices. These rules were created with good intent – allowing Dentist’s to charge according to their duty to care and preventing price fixing across the sector, the  effect has been anti-competitive with dental prices rising 171% over 19 years, over the same period the CPI (consumer price index) rose by only 69%.

Scared of the dentist? – you should be more frightened of your beauty salon

Which MagazineWhich?, the British consumer watchdog magazine, has carried out an investigation into tooth whitening services offered by beauty salons. Their findings should make anybody pause who was thinking of getting that Hollywood smile next time they’re down town. Tooth whitening should only be carried out by a dentist or qualified hygienist (in the UK and Ireland the hygienist must be under the supervision of a qualified dentist) as the chemicals used in the process can permanently damage tooth enamel.

Chewing gum is good for your teeth

Chewing GumThe companies have been telling us that gum is good for you, now the American Dental Association agrees. Three of Wrigley’s sugar free chewing gum products have been awarded the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The process involved a detailed study which concluded that the additional production of saliva stimulated by chewing the gums had a beneficial effect, reducing the incidence of plaque and acid in the mouth.  On this evidence here is no indication that other sugar free chewing gums should perform any differently, only that they have not taken part in the study and so won’t be getting the ADA’s Seal of Acceptance.
