624,000 British And Irish Citizens Will Consider ‘Dental Tourism’ This Year To Save, On Average, £3,745 On The Cost Of Treatment At Home

Dublin, Ireland. 17th July 2007. Over 624,000 British and Irish citizens will search the internet for dental treatment abroad this year, according to Dublin-based RevaHealth.com, the world’s leading ‘medical tourism’ search engine. In June alone, RevaHealth.com can reveal, 156,010 dental tourism-related searches originated in the UK and Ireland, carried out by 52,003 unique users.

This is clear confirmation that more and more British and Irish citizens are considering travelling abroad for dental procedures to avoid long waiting lists and expensive fees at home. To further bring down costs, a large number of these people are choosing to fit treatment around pre-arranged holidays or business trips.

The average value of the overseas dental treatments enquired about specifically through RevaHealth.com (before travel costs) is £2,200, which compares to an average of £5,945 for the equivalent dental treatment in Ireland or the UK. This represents an average saving of £3,745, or 63%.

The table — see notes — highlights the considerable savings UK and Irish citizens can make by being treated abroad. A dental implant in Hungary, for example, will save you 60% on the cost of treatment in the UK or Ireland, a crown in Poland will save you 62.5%, and a veneer in Thailand a phenomenal 70%.

RevaHealth.com is currently receiving 600 dental tourism enquiries per week, of which an average of 355, or 59.1%, originated in the UK or Ireland, leading to an expected total of over 18,400 enquiries from British and Irish residents this year alone. The average age of those enquiring about treatment was 39, 46% were male, and they contacted their chosen clinics approximately 10 weeks before they intended to travel.

The specific treatments they were enquiring about and their intended destinations are as follows:

  • 30% for dental implants
  • 25% for veneers
  • 13% for crowns
  • 10.5% for teeth whitening
  • 7.5% for braces
  • 6.5% for bridges
  • 7.5% for other treatments
  • 45% wanted treatment in Hungary
  • 26% wanted treatment in Poland
  • 10% wanted treatment in Turkey
  • 6% wanted treatment in Spain
  • 4% wanted treatment in Thailand
  • 9% wanted treatment in other countries

To ensure anyone considering travelling abroad for dental treatment is suitably prepared and has a problem-free trip, RevaHealth.com has put together a comprehensive Dental Tourism Information Pack. This contains: a snapshot of dental standards and accreditations in all the main dental tourism destinations; tips on choosing a country and individual clinic; detailed cost comparisons; and other essential questions anyone thinking of being treated abroad should ask. The pack can be downloaded from the RevaHealth.com website, www.revahealth.com.

Caelen King, CEO, RevaHealth.com, commented:

“There are many good reasons why people are deciding to travel abroad for dental treatment, including long waiting lists and the potential for massive cost savings. Some of our users have saved over £8,000 off the cost of local treatment. The positive experiences of people who have had treatment abroad are also helping to dispel the myth that dental treatment outside the UK and Ireland is necessarily inferior and carries large risks. Our mission is to give everyone the information they need to decide if travelling is the right option for them. For the first time ever, this information is available in one click of the mouse through our downloadable Dental Tourism Information Pack.”
